FAQs about heating and cooling repairs in Sugar Land
What would cause my AC to not kick on?
If your AC won’t turn on, something is likely either preventing it from getting power or signaling it to start. Here are some common reasons and what to look for:
- Tripped breaker. Your AC needs a lot of power, and if there’s an electrical overload, the circuit breaker may trip to prevent damage. Check your home’s electrical panel (usually in a garage, basement, or utility closet) and look for a switch that has flipped to the “off” position. If you find one, flip it back on and see if the AC starts. If it trips again, there may be a bigger electrical issue requiring an HVAC technician.
- Thermostat issues. If your thermostat isn’t working properly, it won’t tell your AC to turn on. First, check that your thermostat is set to “cool” and that the temperature is set below the current room temperature. If your thermostat runs on batteries, try replacing them. If it’s hardwired, check for a blank screen, which could mean a power issue.
- Clogged air filter. Your AC pulls air through an air filter before cooling and circulating it. If the filter is too dirty, it can block airflow, making the system overheat and shut down as a safety measure. A clogged filter can also cause ice to build up on the evaporator coils, preventing the AC from running properly. Check your filter (usually found inside the return vent or near the indoor unit) and replace it if it looks dusty or clogged. This should generally be done every couple of months.
- Blown fuse. Many AC units have fuses in the outdoor condenser unit or inside the electrical disconnect box nearby. If a fuse blows, the system won’t receive power and won’t turn on. Fuses are small glass or ceramic cylinders with metal ends. You can check them with a multimeter, but if you’re not comfortable doing this, an HVAC professional can inspect and replace them.
- Faulty capacitor. The capacitor is a small but crucial component that helps start the compressor and fan motor. It looks like a round or oval battery and is located inside the outdoor AC unit. If the capacitor goes bad, the system may not start at all, or you may hear a humming noise as it tries but fails to power up. A technician can test and replace a faulty capacitor if needed.
- Condensate drain backup. Your AC removes moisture from the air, which collects in a drain pan and flows out through a condensate drain line. If this drain gets clogged with dirt, algae, or debris, a safety switch may shut down the system to prevent water damage. If you notice water pooling around your indoor unit or the drain pan is full, you may need to unclog the drain line with a wet/dry vacuum or have a professional clean it.
If none of these solutions fix the problem, it may be time to call a local Sugar Land HVAC technician for a thorough inspection.
Why would a furnace suddenly stop working?
If your furnace suddenly stops working, it could be due to several common issues. These are some possible reasons and what you can do to troubleshoot:
- Thermostat issues. Make sure your thermostat is set to “heat” and not “cool” or “off.” Also, check that the temperature is set higher than the current room temperature. If your thermostat uses batteries, replace them to see if that restores function. If adjusting the thermostat doesn’t trigger the furnace, it may need to be replaced or recalibrated.
- Clogged air filter. Just like with your AC, a dirty air filter can restrict airflow, causing the furnace to overheat and shut down as a safety precaution. Check your filter (usually found in the return air duct or near the furnace) and replace it if it’s clogged with dust and debris.
- Pilot light or ignition problems. If the pilot light has gone out and you have an older furnace (with a pilot light), follow the manufacturer’s instructions to relight it. If it won’t stay lit, there may be an issue with the thermocouple (a sensor that measures the temperature). For newer furnaces (electronic ignition), if the ignitor is dirty or faulty, the furnace won’t start. Ignitors are delicate and usually require professional replacement.
- Tripped circuit breaker. Go to your electrical panel and check if the breaker for your furnace has tripped. If it has, reset it by flipping it off and then back on. If the breaker trips repeatedly, it could indicate an electrical issue that needs professional repair.
- Gas supply issues. Check the gas valve. If the gas valve has been turned off or the supply is disrupted, the furnace won’t function. If your stove or water heater is also not working, you may have a larger gas supply issue and should contact your utility company immediately.
- Faulty flame sensor. The flame sensor detects if the burners are lit. If it’s dirty or faulty, the furnace may shut down for safety. If you’re comfortable doing so, carefully clean the flame sensor with a soft cloth or fine sandpaper. If that doesn’t work, a technician may need to replace it.
- Blocked or disconnected vents. A blocked exhaust vent or flue pipe can trigger a safety shutoff. Snow, debris, or animal nests can sometimes clog outdoor vents, so ensure the vent pipes outside are clear of obstructions.
If you’ve checked these common issues and your furnace still won’t turn on, it may be time to call an HVAC technician. You should seek professional help if:
- The furnace keeps shutting off repeatedly.
- You smell gas. (Turn off the gas immediately and leave your home before calling for help.)
- The blower runs, but there’s no heat.
- You hear strange noises like banging, grinding, or rattling.
The expert HVAC technicians at Richmond’s Air can diagnose and fix complex issues like a faulty control board, blower motor failure, or a failing heat exchanger to keep your home warm and comfortable all winter long.
How long do HVAC units last in Texas?
The lifespan of an HVAC system in Texas is typically 10 to 20 years, but extreme heat, high humidity, and year-round use can shorten their lifespan. Regular maintenance—like changing filters, cleaning ductwork, and scheduling tune-ups—can help extend the life of your system.
The type of HVAC system you have also makes a difference. Higher-quality units and energy-efficient models tend to last longer, while cheaper units or ones that are poorly installed often lead to early failure.
Texas weather puts extra strain on air conditioners, so if your unit is over 15 years old, upgrading to a newer, more efficient system may save on energy costs and improve performance.
