Are you stuffy and sneezy in your own home? Does the dust just seem to pile up despite your best cleaning efforts? If you’re suffering from dirty indoor air, the good news is that there are some relatively inexpensive and easy changes you can make.
Here are three tips from the residential AC experts at Richmond’s Air:
- 1) Buy a Better Air Filter: Before you go out and buy a pricey standalone air purifier, keep in mind that you already have a much more powerful one in your home: your central air system. All you need is an air filter that can pick up dust and allergens. Upgrade to a filter with a MERV rating between 8 and 10, which are available at your local home improvement store.
- 2) Monitor Your Indoor Humidity Levels: During this time of year in Houston, it’s not unusual have both the air and the heat turned off. While it’s nice to have such comfortable weather, homes without a forced air system running are at risk for mold and mildew outbreaks.
Gauge the humidity in your home with a smart thermostat or hygrometer. Anything over 50% could cause problems. Run your bathroom fans and consider a whole house dehumidifier if necessary.
- 3) Take Off Your Shoes: 85% of the dirt we track inside comes from our shoes, according to the Healthy Child Organization. Simply having your family and guests remove their shoes before entry is an easy way to clean up the air. If you have an indoor-outdoor pet, they can track in all sorts of contaminants along with their fur and dander – so a more rigorous cleaning schedule is a must.
