If you are sitting there scratching your head wondering why certain rooms in your house or office freeze or burn up during various times of the year, your answer may lie in the ductwork. In an HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system, ductwork is used to distribute conditioned air throughout the building. If ductwork is not sealed properly or has been installed incorrectly, you will be uncomfortable as well as experience higher than normal utility bills.
When you are running your air conditioner, cold air may be seeping into unnecessary spaces such as the attic, basement or crawlspaces. Not only are you losing air if this occurs, but you are practically throwing money away!
EnergyStar.gov reports that 20 to 30 percent of air moving through duct systems is lost due to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts. Leaky ducts are no doubt the biggest energy drain when it comes to heat and air loss.
You may have an improperly sealed ductwork if:
- You find kinks or tangled ducts in your system.
- Your utility bills are unusually high in the summer or winter months.
- You have rooms that never reach an optimal temperature no matter what you do.
- You have ducts that are located in the basement, attic or crawlspace.
It is absolutely necessary to seal your ductwork properly. Check out our Heat Beat Knowledge Center to learn why your leaky ductwork is costing you money and what you can do about it.
